Ride for a Child was launched in August 2023, a fundraising project for Rata Social Services.  All funds raised through this initiative is dedicated towards all child protection services.

We would like to express our sincerest thanks and gratitude for all of those persons and individuals who have donated towards this project and cause! Every contribution is making a difference in a child in need’s life.

Jammer oor die lang post, “but bear with me”😄

Groete Annatjie Van Wyk

Meet Annatjie van Wyk the woman taking on The Munga for Rata

I have been cycling for 26 years, of which the first 20 odd years were only road cycling.  I bought myself a mountain bike because I wanted to cycle to work as it was just a lot safer.  One thing led to another and I then started doing mountain bike races, which I enjoy much more than road cycling!

I have completed a number of road races;

  • Cape Argus (110km)
  • 94.7 (94.7km)
  • Jock of the Bushveld (150km)
  • Maluti in Clarens (180km)

Mountain bike races I completed were;

  • Race to the Sun (160km)
  • Cullinan to Tonteldoos (250Km)
  • Joburg to Sea (900km)
  • TransBaviaans (250km)
  • Munga Sword Series (250km).
  • The Munga 2022 (730km) became ill
  • The Munga 2023 (450km) broke collar bone.

I have learned about Rata and their cause, through a friend.  Children are very close to my heart, and that is why I decided to make my suffering, i.e. riding an extreme race like the Munga, worthwhile.

The Munga is an extreme challenge, not only on the body, but mentally as well.  Riding through the Karoo at night, all alone, with only the sounds of a jackal howling in the distance, makes one think a lot about your own life and how privileged we really are.  And that is what I would like to achieve with my involvement with Rata.  To give a child the opportunity to have a normal and stabilized life, to grow up without the fear of abuse and/or neglect.  My sincerest hope is that with what I am willing to go through by riding 1130km on my bicycle, that it will inspire other people to open their hearts to contribute to a child’s future, however small an amount.

It takes a village to raise a child……
