The food products were sold online as a combo and consisted of a 6kg bag of fresh veggies, 2.5kg Maize meal and 1kg Veggie soup.

The Cradle of Hope, Bethany House Trust, CMR Noord, Care Protect Invest – SA, Gracia Care Centre, Heart, Soul & Mind asook Laerskool Kameeldrift.

Together with non-profit organisations (NPO’s), the WeCan community has successfully collected and donated 63 393 kg food in 37 separate projects already completed. The projects, known as “LIVE challenges” seek to raise specific amounts of food items on behalf of a particular WeCan beneficiary, or hero, within a certain time.

The collection happens online, where the public can purchase food products on behalf of the beneficiary based on their specific needs. As soon as the project time runs out, the products are given to the WeCan beneficiary organisation to distribute to the people in their care.

WeCan LIVE challenges

The “LIVE” challenges are tackled one at a time, however with the extended lockdown period, the number of people in need is increasing daily. Since the launch of this organisation the day before the national COVID-19 lockdown began in South Africa, more than 277 000 meals have been distributed to help relief the immediate need for food in the less privileged communities.

“The WeCan beneficiaries care for the vulnerable in our country, and WeCan wants to enable them to continue the good work they do every day”, says Francois Mouton, founder and CEO of WeCan.

WeCan obtains nutritious food items for its projects at the best possible prices from food producers and suppliers across South Africa. The drastically reduced prices from food producers and suppliers, as well as each individual or company donation, contribute to a sustainable model that ensures the continuous support of WeCan beneficiaries. This model works very well because we address each beneficiary’s specific needs with food obtained at prices that add more value to every cent. This means that the beneficiaries are not solely reliant on donations.

WeCan invites other NPO’s to register as a WeCan Hero by completing the registration form available on the website. The completed form can be emailed to info@wecansa.co.za and more information will be sent to the organisation.

The WeCan website, www.wecanSA.co.za, offers easy access to a Payfast payment system that also works on smartphones, enabling all South Africans as well as people around the world to make a difference in the lives of needy South Africans. Together #WeCan

WeCan SHOP4 Heroes

It has become clear that the need is too great to support only one WeCan beneficiary at a time and a second initiative called, “SHOP4 Heroes” was launched. This online store allows people to shop for their chosen WeCan hero at any time of the month according to a specific list, which includes the exact quantities required for beneficiaries’ food parcels.

Organisations that are already listed on the SHOP4 Heroes page include: The Cradle of Hope, Bethany House Trust, CMR Noord, Care Protect Invest – SA, Gracia Care Centre asook Heart, Soul & Mind and Kameeldrift Primary School.

According to Melodie van Brakel, CEO of the Cradle of Hope, they are very grateful to utilize this platform. “We are extremely grateful to be a registered WeCan Hero and to receive support through the platform and especially the long lasting SHOP4 Heroes initiative. It helps a great deal to be in a position to receive the food we need and we can focus on handing it out. The food we have received has made a massive difference in the lives of the people we are supporting.”
